How Long Does a Photo Last?

Long Exposure of a Firework — New Year’s Eve 2017

One Mississippi. It seems almost arbitrary that the time it takes most humans to say those two words but in lieu of a stopwatch it is a pretty good approximation for a second. A second does not seem like a long period of time. It becomes even more insignificant when you realize 86,400 of them that make up a single day. Through the lens of human history, a second is meaningless and insignificant. On the contrary, for everything that takes longer than a second to happen, there are infinitely many other things that occur in this amount of time. From the whizz of a fastball reaching home plate to, the flap of a hummingbird wing, when you change reference frames, a second feels like an eternity.

Life moves fast and sometimes too fast for our eyes to capture. need transition. Since the first photo was taken, cameras have provided mankind with the incredible ability to stop time for only a fraction of a second.

When you look at a photo you are able to transport back and re-experience that moment as if it just happened. Photography is just as much of a visual journey as it is an emotional one. The essence of a photo is just as important as the visual impact it has on the viewer. And that is where the beauty of this art form lies.

Every day, over 1 billion photos are uploaded to the internet. To begin to be able to fathom that magnitude of photos is mind-numbing but they only exist in a virtual sense. Technically the file is physically stored on some hard driver in some server but That is the beauty of analog photography, from the moment the shutter is pressed, light exposes the film. Developing that roll will get you a physical artifact to look back at a particular moment and recollect the emotions and stories that were being told.

For me, photography takes many forms but most importantly it is my muse. It is an empowering feeling to be able to capture the emotion and real-life experiences on a piece of film

Life-Long Exposure is a platform be able to share the moments and experiences in my life as they occur through a camera lens one frame at a time. My goal is to provide insight and commentary for members of the analog community. As I share my journey with you I look forward to growing as a photographer, artist, and subsequently a person.
